We think that Science is only important when the general public has access to it. Our lab has taken steps to educate and excite people about scientific discoveries.
Microbiology Summer Science Camp - The Summer camp aims to provide research experience to high school students. We have been using examples of culture-independent community analysis and the implications of this technology to soils sciences and water conservation, and medical sciences. Graduate students in my laboratory participate as Teaching Assistants.
I-ENGAGE Program - Undergraduate students work in the lab with a graduate student during the Summer. They received a very defined research question and go after the answer.
Science without borders - Our laboratory received the 2010 American Society for Microbiology Professorship Award. Together with Dr. Klaus Nusslein, University of Massachusetts, we developed a workshop in Molecular Microbial Ecology in Ecuador.
UC LEADS = Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees - A two-year program designed for educationally and/or economically disadvantaged undergraduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students are selected to be future leaders in their fields of interest.
Biodiversity and Conservation in the Tropics - In collaboration with Drs. Siu Mui Tsai and Acacio Navarrete, we provide a two-week course with theory and laboratory practices for graduate students in Brazil every other Summer.
